Dental Cleanings

Great at-home oral hygiene routines are extremely important to the continued health and success of your teeth. Not far behind in importance is coming in for your regular, bi-annual cleanings at Hillsboro Dental Center. During your cleanings we can find places that you might miss in your normal brushing and flossing routines, make sure they are clean and ready for another six months!

Professional Dental Cleanings for Kids

Dental cleanings are a great chance for us to educate kids on the importance of keeping their teeth clean. Good habits that are formed in childhood are much more likely to become a normal routine in adulthood. The ADA recommends that kids make their first trip to the dentist as soon as their first tooth shows up. By introducing you children to us we can build a positive relationship with them.

Professional Dental Cleanings for Adults

Having your teeth cleaned by our professional staff ensures that anything you may miss in your normal oral health routine is caught and cleaned thoroughly. The peace of mind that comes with a professional cleaning and examination is well worth the trip to our office.

Plaque and Tartar

We have all heard about plaque and tartar and vaguely understand that they are not good for our mouth, but what are they? The bacteria in our mouth that feeds upon the sugars and acids leftover from the foods we consume are what plaque and tartar are made of.

After a normal day sometimes our teeth feel as though they have a coating of fuzz over their surfaces. If you run your tongue over this fuzz, it’s obvious that it’s not a normal part of your tooth. If you were to take your fingernail and scrap at the fuzz and observe it, you would find that it’s a sticky substance. That sticky substance is called plaque. Generally, we remove plaque from our teeth with the act of brushing and flossing. If the plaque is missed, or allowed to stay on our teeth for too long, it will harden and turn into what is known as tartar.

When plaque hardens and forms tartar it can’t be very difficult to remove. Most of the dental hygiene products that are sold to the general public are not capable of removing tartar. Most of the places where tartar builds-up in the mouth is not easy to see. For these reasons tartar removal ought to be left to dental professionals.

We have access to ultrasonic scaling tools that make breaking up plaque and tartar easy and safe. The ultrasonic scaler uses ultrasonic vibrations coupled with an antimicrobial solution to break through the cracks in tartar and wash it away.

Tooth Polishing

All cleanings at Hillsboro Dental Center will be followed by a thorough polishing. We use a gritty polishing compound and a soft rubber “prophy” cup to polish your teeth. Polishing not only makes your teeth appear more beautiful, it makes teeth more smooth which makes it harder for decay causing bacteria to build-up on the surface of your teeth.
